Sharebeast Shut Down By Justice Department

Indie Music Supporter:

Another illegal file-sharing outpost has bit the dust. The Department of Justice has turned the lights off at Sharebeast.com, described as the largest U.S.-based music piracy site, for distributing “a massive library of popular albums and tracks” before their release.

The dreaded FBI Anti-Piracy Warning now appears on Sharebeast.com and its sister site albumjams.com. In a statement, the RIAA said it had reported more than 100,000 infringing files to the service for takedown.

Calling it a “huge win for the music community,” RIAA chairman and CEO Cary Sherman slammed Sharebeast for operating “with flagrant disregard for the rights of artists and labels while undermining the legal marketplace. Millions of users accessed songs from Sharebeast each month without one penny of compensation going to countless artists, songwriters, labels and others who created the music.”

The reaction by some former Sharebeast users has not been as positive.
